You Don’t Need to Be an Expert — Just a Step Ahead
You’ve probably had this thought:
“Who am I to share this? I’m not an expert.”
Maybe you're starting a blog.
Or launching a course.
Or trying to teach something you’ve just figured out for yourself.
And you worry someone’s going to say,
“Wait, who do you think you are?”
But here’s the truth:
You don’t need to be the best. You just need to be helpful.
And often, the most helpful person isn’t ten steps ahead.
It’s the one who’s just one step ahead, close enough to remember what it’s like to be stuck.
Experts Are Sometimes Too Far Removed
They’ve mastered the thing. But they forget what it was like not to know.
They say things like “just batch your content” or “optimize for conversion”, and you’re sitting there Googling what that even means.
Someone one step ahead doesn’t talk down to you.
They say, “Here’s what worked for me last week.”
That’s gold.
You’re Allowed to Teach While You Learn
You can:
Share what you’re learning in real time
Walk people through what you would’ve needed when you were starting
Build in public, and let others learn as you go
Being in the messy middle makes you more relatable, not less valuable.
People don’t always want a guru.
Sometimes they just want a guide.
What If Someone Knows More Than Me?
They probably do.
There’s always someone further along.
But there’s also someone behind you, right now, looking for a way in, someone who’s overwhelmed, overthinking, or trying to piece it together from scratch.
You can be the shortcut.
What to Say Instead of “I’m Not an Expert”
Try this:
“This is what I’m learning.”
“Here’s what helped me.”
“This might help you too.”
“If I were starting again, here’s what I’d do.”
You’re not pretending to know it all. You’re inviting people to grow with you.
That’s generous. And people feel it.
Bottom Line
The internet doesn’t need more experts.
It needs more real people, sharing what they know, in a way others can actually use.
So no, you don’t need to wait.
You don’t need more credentials.
You just need to be willing.
One step ahead is far enough.
